Sex ed.

My topic, more than abstinence only sex education, caught my attention. With the continuing debate about whether public schools should only focus on abstinence has been a controversy for schools for a number of years. I believe that sex education must focus on not only abstinence, but prevention methods, ways to seek help, consequences of sexual behavior and instruction to take if a negative consequence arises. A few years ago, abstinence was the main or only focus in sex ed. courses. Although abstinence is the best prevention of STD’s, HIV’s, and unwanted pregnancy, other methods need to be taught in sex ed. In today’s society, sex is one of the biggest aspects of the media. Thus, sex in the media strongly influences teens in America. More than half of the sexual behaviors on television involve nonmarital partners. I believe that it is vital to preview as many as possible prevention methods as well as action to take once something unexpected has taken place in sex ed. programs. It is proven that the more information someone has on sex, the better his or her decisions will be.
